The Mysteries of Chaco Canyon
Informally known as “The Machu Pichu of North America“, Chaco Canyon is a hidden gem that is often overlooked due to the remote location of the site. With pre and post expedition stays at the Five Graces, meals, and a team meeting before your departure you can rest assured that all of your needs will be met for this amazing journey.
Hidden deep in the remote desert of New Mexico, Chaco Canyon is one of the world’s most sacred and mysterious cultural sites—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park known for its extraordinary stargazing. On select nights each year, during the New Moon, the canyon reveals a dazzling display of stars that few ever witness.
Our Chaco Canyon Expedition offers exclusive access to this celestial event and to the autumn equinox sunrise, when the light aligns perfectly through the northern doorways of Casa Rinconada, the largest kiva in the American Southwest. Only 100 guests each September are permitted before dawn to travel the one-way road into the heart of the canyon for this rare experience. Led by our Cultural Astronomer, you’ll enjoy an illuminating talk honoring the ancient sky watchers who observed these alignments over a thousand years ago.
Upon arrival at our exquisite glamping base camps, you’ll be treated to seasonal, multi-course gourmet meals meticulously prepared by our talented executive Glamping Chef, Josh Willette. Your accommodations will go far beyond the typical camping experience, featuring spacious canvas tents equipped with luxurious amenities such as raised wooden bed frames, memory foam mattresses, bedside tables, comfortable butterfly canvas chairs, plush rugs, and enchanting southwest textiles.
As night falls over Chaco Canyon, you’ll be awed by a sky ablaze with the Milky Way and countless shimmering stars. Far from city lights, this International Dark Sky Park invites you to reconnect with the natural rhythm of the cosmos while exploring the ancient astronomy of the ancestral Puebloans. Guided by our Cultural Astronomer, you’ll embark on a laser-guided journey through the constellations—discovering the origins of star names from ancient Arabian traditions still used today—and gaze through telescopes at distant planets, clusters, and galaxies.
The following morning, rise before dawn for a twilight hike to the Fajada Butte Overlook during our New Moon expeditions, where the delicate hues of the Belt of Venus paint the sky above the canyon. During the Equinox expedition, you’ll witness the sunrise perfectly align through the east and west doors of Casa Rinconada, the great ceremonial kiva. This moment of cosmic symmetry is believed to represent the ancestral Puebloan cosmos, offering a powerful glimpse into the spiritual heart of Chaco.
